Getting Customer to make that first months premium at point of sale

I've done many presentations and people have wanted to take out an insurance policy, however I cannot join them up until they have made their first months payment to me. I set a day (normally within 7 days) to come back and collect and when I do they have either canceled or tell me to come back the following week and this can go on and on to the point the sale is never completed. Can you advise ways where the customer will pay up without hesitation?
