Hiring agents in a very competitive environment

Hiring new agents is always a challenge. My first suggestion, is that you need to have a bigger and better mousetrap. The number one things we found when we built our 150 person agency was that agents wanted structure, new ideas and training and a professional environment

Most broker agencies and manager thinking today is that they recruit to their product or product portfolio and high commission. That is stinkin thinkin as I say. Everyone offers that.

When I built my 150 person agency, our product was very mediocre. But what we sold new agents on, was selling a concept, the opportunity to build their own agency and provided a complete written and detailed blueprint that they could relate to.

We always knew that when someone looked at our agency or coming into the insurance business, that they were going to go check with other companies. That was a given.

When ever we ended up recruiting someone, I always asked them why did they decide to join our team. In every case they basically said, you have an organized written system, a development program and you teach people how to sell concepts and a lot of fired up people willing to help each other. None of the other companies I looked at offered me any of this.

In essence, we had a bigger and better mousetrap.
